Housing: Senior
Independent Living
Cooperative
Senior housing cooperatives are
similar to apartments, but have
a different financial
arrangement. Shareholders or
tenants live in an apartment
building that is owned by a
not-for-profit cooperative
corporation. Residents buy a
share in the co-op, and the
cooperative owns the land,
building, and common areas.
Residents are entitled to live in
a housing unit as part of their
membership benefits. Members
pay a fixed amount each month
that covers basic expenses
including mortgage and property
taxes. Cooperatives are “private
pay” institutions because of the
ownership structure.

Housing: (Skilled
Nursing Facilities,
Long Term Care)
Skilled nursing facilities (SNF)
bundle a comprehensive package
of room, board, and nursing
services. The cost for living in a
skilled nursing facility depends
on the care level of the resident.
Before all of the other options
of housing became available,
SNFs used to have a wide
variety of active level seniors
living there. With the advent of
senior housing and assisted living
housing, SNFs now have become
the housing location for seniors
who need the higher care levels.
Some skilled nursing facilities
have examining rooms where
appointments can be made to
see a physician, eye doctor, or
even a dentist on-site without
having to leave. There are times
when a person may have a
temporary situation like a broken
leg where there is a need to be in
a SNF for a few months, and he
can then move back into assisted
living later. Physical therapy,
occupational therapy, and speech
therapy may be services provided
at certain care levels. Residents
of skilled nursing facilities can be
private pay or on assistance.
